Cafe Terrace At Night

Vincent Van Gogh

oil on canvas, 81cmx65cm, 1888

Kröller-Müller Museum

I love the use of (mostly) primary colours in this piece. There’s something whimsical, fun and animated about the painting – not usually words we associate with the temperamental Van Gogh himself. History has taught us that Vincent was a tortured soul and yet his painting is optimistic and cheerful in spirit; obviously his work was therapeutic for him. He used an extreme perspective that doesn’t quite work, technically speaking, but we forgive it because the piece still pulls together as a whole.
