Elevation Of The Cross
Peter Paul Rubens
182x134inches, oil on canvas, 1610-1611
Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp
This is the middle panel of a triptych – I’ve posted a photo of the full piece below for your interest. Elevation Of The Cross has great use of drama, tension, movement and ‘chiaroscuro’ – light and dark. Rubens’ anatomical detail is brilliant. I used to spend a great deal of time at the AGO looking at an oil sketch for this piece, if memory serves me correctly, and it inspired me to work harder, to be better, to strive for more. The subject matter, the artistry, the history, move me deeply.
